Founded in 1229 by Berengaria of Navarre, widow of Richard the Lionheart, the Royal Abbey of L'Épau is a remarkable example of Cistercian architecture. Located in Yvré-l'Évêque, on the left bank of the Huisne River, it is only a few minutes from the centre of Le Mans.Weakened over the centuries by wars and financial difficulties, the abbey was saved from ruin when it was acquired in 1959 by the Sarthe General Council, which has since ensured its preservation and promotion.
